Chimera chimère








Up for auction - interesting original signed etching by French artist ANTOINE MONAY (1922-1954) depicting 2 separate gargoyles or chimera from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It is signed YVON in pencil in the lower right margin and is identified as No.27 (lower corner of righthand image). Yvon is the pseudonym used by Monay, who was the nephew of the painter Pierre Monay (1896-1974). Yvon exhibited in Paris and Lausanne 1944-1954. believe this to be from the 1940's. The image at left is a goat demon and the one to the right is a winged and horned "penseur" - thinker. Each images measures approximately 3 1/8" x 5" and there is a flock very small birds at tool right corner of left image flying in from the top left corner of the right image, acting as a visual bridge between the two. The imprint mark of the printing plate measures approximately 7 1/4" x 5 5/8". The exterior size of the print is approximately 8" x 11". No tears. Slightly age darkened. Very slight diagonal bend mark on back.*Please view all photos. Margaretha Tekla Johanna (Etha) Fles (Utrecht, 1 mei 1857 – Bergen, 31 januari 1948) was een Nederlandse kunstcriticus, schrijfster en schilderes, die wordt gerekend tot de Larense School en de Tachtigers.[1]
