Een dichter, twee racisten en hun schilders

We zijn het allang vergeten, maar de Waalse socialistische volksheld Jules Destrée (1863-1936), wiens standbeeld nu op de Boulevard de l'Yser in Charleroi prijkt, was een  groot estheet. Zoals de dichters Emile Verhaeren en Maurice Maeterlinck deed hij zijn advocatenstage bij Edmond Picard, de leidende figuur van L'Art Moderne en de allereerste socialistische senator. Destrée publiceerde essays over Rogier Van der Weyden, de meester van Flémalle en de Italiaanse primitieven. In de jaren 1880 had hij echter vooral een passie voor literatuur, onderhield contacten met J.‑K. Huysmans en publiceerde zelf twee bundels poëtisch proza. Eén ervan, Les chimères uit 1889, kreeg een titelpagina mee van Odilon Redon. In 1891 publiceerde Destrée overigens een eerste catalogue raisonné over diens lithografieën.

This is an original 1925 black and white wood engraving of a portrait of Joseph Pennell etching from the tower by Aubrey Beardsley. She sketched it while they were in Paris together.

Chimera chimère

Up for auction - interesting original signed etching by French artist ANTOINE MONAY (1922-1954) depicting 2 separate gargoyles or chimera from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It is signed YVON in pencil in the lower right margin and is identified as No.27 (lower corner of righthand image). Yvon is the pseudonym used by Monay, who was the nephew of the painter Pierre Monay (1896-1974). Yvon exhibited in Paris and Lausanne 1944-1954. believe this to be from the 1940's. The image at left is a goat demon and the one to the right is a winged and horned "penseur" - thinker. Each images measures approximately 3 1/8" x 5" and there is a flock very small birds at tool right corner of left image flying in from the top left corner of the right image, acting as a visual bridge between the two. The imprint mark of the printing plate measures approximately 7 1/4" x 5 5/8". The exterior size of the print is approximately 8" x 11". No tears. Slightly age darkened. Very slight diagonal bend mark on back.*Please view all photos. Margaretha Tekla Johanna (Etha) Fles (Utrecht, 1 mei 1857 – Bergen, 31 januari 1948) was een Nederlandse kunstcriticus, schrijfster en schilderes, die wordt gerekend tot de Larense School en de Tachtigers.[1]

Op de foto zijn duidelijk meer details te zien, zoals de klok en overuidelijk kilgoot - die het water naar de goot brengt.


Hoewel we hier te maken hebben met een ansichtkaart die door JDB gecopieerd werd, is het ook zo dat dit beeld typerend is voor JDB zoals Piet Boyens schrijft: "Zijn vorm van schoonheid reikt naar die van Dulle Griet, zijn expressie naar de uitdrukkingskracht van de spuwers der kathedralen".
