Trouvé la lettre hier après midi - heureux d’avoir reçu des nouvelles - mais j’avais la trousse d’ouvrir ! pensant qu’il y avait quelque chose d’urgent. Comme dit dans ma carte de vendredi matin - je roule avec le rapide vers Bourges ! et rentre ce soir Paris. 3 heures pour y travailler - plus qu’il me faut !**

Qu’est ce que tu dis de papa. Kleber* hé ! Je rentre donc dimanche après-midi content d’avoir fait tout cela. A bientôt et tendres baisers pour toi et les gosses. Compliments Margo.*

Hedley Fitton

Hedley Fitton (c. 1858-1929) was an England engraver and printmaker noted mainly for his architectural etchings. His etchings included street scenes and important cathedrals in London, Florence, Edinburgh, and Paris. In 1907 the Société des Artistes Français awarded Fitton a Gold Medal for his work.

His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, Royal Watercolour Association and at the Paris Salon.

Hedley Fitton was familiar with the old windmills on the southeast coast not far from London and produced a popular etching called "The Two Mills". His best known works are "The Pantheon, Rome" and "The Rose Window, Notre Dame". His etchings depict many of the venerated landmarks of the time.

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he represents the main facade of Rouen's medieval cathedral, in northern France, a scaffolding erected at one end and figures walking on the plaza,. The artist printed about ninety proofs.

 Volgens Karel VDW: Pennell was één de etsers die JDB hebben beïnvloed. 

Joseph Pennell (1857 – 1926) werkte in de States, verhuist in 1884 naar Engeland en wordt bevriend met Whistler.

"Whistler entrusted the Pennells to write his biography, which was published in 1908."

De Parijse drukker en uitgever Alfred Cadart (1828–1875) en de kunstenaar François Antoine Maxime Lalanne (1827-1886) worden de pioniers en voortrekkers van de etskunst. In 1862 stichten zij de Société des aquafortistes (tot 1867) die etsen publiceert en garant staat voor de kwaliteit. Lalanne is de kunstenaar van het duo die een standaardwerk schrijft over het etsen (1866) dat over heel Europa bekend wordt en tot in de Verenigde Staten gebruikt wordt (1880). Het boek ligt aan de basis van de (herop)bloei van de etskunst. * Whistler en Rickert.

Uit Rouen? De afbeelding verwijst duidelijk naar de kathedraal

Afgestempeld in Parijs? 

En hij schrijft "je roule avec le rapide (sneltrein?) vers Bourges. 

Checken bij John?  Datum van afstempelen. Ik zie ergens (19)29. 

Opvallend: "ne jette pas la carte".
