Ensor

De ets "De kathedraal" is een van Ensors beroemdste etsen. Het is een compilatie van verschillende gezichtspunten van de Dom van Aken, met uitzondering van de torens die de kunstenaar er zelf aan toevoegde. Voor de ets inspireerde Ensor zich op een aquarel uit 1836 van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Gerrit Hulseboom (Aken, Historisches Museum). Anderzijds is de opeen gedromde menigte op de voorgrond typisch voor Ensors massataferelen. In 1896 herwerkte hij dezelfde ets in een tweede plaat, omdat de eerste volgens zijn biograaf Albert Croquez zoek was geraakt (Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent, inv. 1998-B-105).

Etching, 1932, LeRoy 172, edition unknown. 23 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Titled in pencil in the lower left and inscribed, "1e etat" (first state). This is a superb impression of this monumental print. The margins are full and the condition is fine. This masterpiece of etching is an exceptional example of the artist's flair for detail and drama. Loosely sketched figures are depicted parading up the steps. He produced another large work of Amiens Cathedral in 1929 which is illustrated on this site. (RESERVED)   

De Kathedrale basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw (Frans: Notre-Dame) is de grootste kerk van de Franse stad Amiens, de hoofdstad van de voormalige regio Picardië. Het is de grootste gotische kathedraal van Frankrijk en behoort met die van Chartres, Reims en Bourges tot de zuiverste voorbeelden van de gotiek.
